Introduction of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758
2021-11-11 21:05

On October 25, 1971, the 26th Session of the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution 2758 with an overwhelming majority, which decided to restore all rights of the People’s Republic of China in the United Nations(UN), and recognized that the representative of the People’s Republic of China are the only lawful representatives of China in the UN. It came as the result of joint efforts of all peace-loving countries that stood up for justice in the world. It marked the return of the Chinese people, or one-fourth of the world's population, back to the UN stage. The importance was significant and far-reaching for both China and the wider world.

The United Nations is an intergovernmental international organization composed of sovereign states. UNGA Resolution 2758 has solved once and for all the issue of the PRC's representation in the UN in political, legal and procedural terms. There is only one China in the world, the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is a part of the Chinese territory. This has been a universal consensus of the international community before 50 years ago. For half of a century, the system, agencies and the Secretariat of the UN have always been dealing with Taiwan-related affairs abiding by the one-China principle and UNGA Resolution 2758. The one-China principle brooks no challenge and Resolution 2758 cannot be distorted.

Tanzania had played a leading role in the campaign to restore China’s lawful seat in the UN every year in the United Nations General Assembly since 1969. It was also among the 23 co-sponsors of the draft resolution calling for restoring the lawful rights of the People’s Republic of China in the UN in 1971. Tanzania has made outstanding contributions to the restoration of China’s lawful seat in the UN. The then Tanzanian Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, successfully foiled some country’s attempt to retain Taiwan’s seat in the UN during the voting of the Resolution 2758, which has always been appreciated and remembered by the Chinese people. China is willing to continue working together with Tanzania and all other developing countries to uphold the authority of the UN and safeguard the true multilateralism.
