On January 16, 2024, Ambassador Chen Mingjian’s article titled “The one-China principle is the solid anchor for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait” was published by Daily News and IPP Media websites. Here is the full text:

The elections in China’s Taiwan region were over. To help Tanzanian friends to get a better understanding of the Taiwan question, I would like to share China’s position on unswerving adherence to the one-China principle and belief in a more solid consensus of the international community on upholding it.

First, the one-China principle is unshakable and brooks no challenge. Taiwan has been an inalienable part of the Chinese territory since ancient times. The 1943 Cairo Declaration and the 1945 Potsdam Proclamation clearly stipulated Taiwan should be restored to China. At its 26th session in October 1971, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758, which settled once and for all the political, legal and procedural issues of China’s representation in the United Nations. Whatever changes take place in Taiwan, the basic fact that there is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China will not change. The result of the elections in the Taiwan region cannot change the underlying dynamic and future direction of cross-Strait relations. Nor can it stop the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and China’s reunification.

Second, the international community has an even stronger prevailing consensus on upholding the one-China principle and long-standing and overwhelming adherence to this principle. The Taiwan question is China’s internal affair. It is the core of China’s core interests. The one-China principle is the political premise on which China establishes and develops diplomatic relations with other countries, a universally recognized basic norm in international relations and a prevailing consensus among the international community. We are committed to defending China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, opposing to any form of “Taiwan independence”. Anyone in the international community who violates the one-China principle is interfering in China’s internal affairs and infringing upon China’s sovereignty, and will face the joint opposition of the Chinese people and the international community.

Third, the pursuit of reunification remains always the mainstream value of the whole Chinese nation. Resolving the Taiwan question and realizing China’s complete reunification is a shared aspiration of the Chinese people and an unavoidable requirement for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Throughout China’s history, the pursuit of reunification and the opposition to secession have always been the mainstream values of the whole nation, and have been deeply ingrained in the spirit and blood of the Chinese people. Over the past decades, increased exchanges, broader cooperation and closer interactions have brought tangible benefits to people across straits. The complete reunification of the motherland is a sacred historical task for the whole Chinese nation and is where the fundamental interests of the nation lies.

China highly appreciates Tanzania for its longstanding commitment to the one-China principle, and for always standing with China on issues concerning China’s core interests and major concerns. China and Tanzania will continue to make joint efforts to promote cooperation between the two countries so as to realize the great rejuvenation of both nations.
