Chinese Embassy in Tanzania Briefing about the Earthquake Situation

On May 15, the Chinese Embassy, in form of note verbal, briefed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Republic of Tanzania, all Diplomatic, Consular Missions and International Organizations accredited to Tanzania about the deadly earthquake that hit Sichuan province of China. The full text is as follows:

On 12th May, 2008 at 14:28 local time, a devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted Wenchuan County in Southwest China's Sichuan province. The epicenter of the quake is located at 31.0 degrees north latitude and 103.4 degrees east longitude. The Quake Relief Command headed by H. E. Mr. Wen Jiabao, Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, was formed immediately after the quake rocked Sichuan province. The top priority now is to rescue the wounded people trapped under the collapsed buildings. According to the latest statistics, the death toll has been rising to 14,866 by May 14, 2008. The Chinese government and people are doing everything possible to carry out disaster relief.

Many countries and international organizations have expressed their willingness to offer assistance in earthquake relief. Some have sent personnel to join the rescue efforts by Chinese government and people. And the world leadership, including H. E. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of the United Republic of Tanzania, a lot of counterparts and friends from the diplomatic corps to Tanzania, have expressed their concern and delivered the message of condolence to China and the Embassy in the wake of the devastating earthquake. The Embassy wishes to express sincere appreciation for the valuable support of the international community.
