The latest information on the quake in China as of 19 May

  • Magnitude: revised from 7.8 to 8.0 Richter scale
  • Disaster area: around 100,000 square kilometers
  • The death toll: 34,073 as 12:00 a.m. of 19 May
  • The number of injured: 245,108. 52,934 hospitalized, 7,979 of them have left hospitals.
  • People pulled out from the debris: 36,563 by 18 May
  • Latest rescued: Mr. Ma Yuanjiang at 00:50 a.m. of 20 May, nearly 179 hours after the quake.
  • Remain buried: more than 9,500 by 18 May. Rescuers including those from Russia, Japan, Singapore and the Republic of Korea, are still searching for survivors.
  • Aftershocks: over 3000. By 17 May, 143 measuring 4 or higher on the Richter scale. The biggest was magnitude 6.1.
  • People staying in government shelters: over 4.5 million as of 18 May
  • Houses damaged: 15.61 million, with 3.13 million collapsed.
  • Farmland damaged: 33,333 hectares, including more than 10,000 hectares of wheat and rice and more than 20,000 hectares of vegetables
  • Estimated economic damage: over 20 billion U.S. dollars
  • Relief fund earmarked by the Government: 5.782 billion yuan (826 million U. S. dollars)
  • Donations of domestic and overseas: 10.834 billion yuan (1.548 billion U.S. dollars) by 1 p.m. of 19 May
  • Cases of epidemics or emergent public health incidents: none

A DNA database will be build by the Government to allow identification of dead in the quake.

China State Council ordered a nationwide display of respect for the dead. Flags are to be kept at half-mast and all public amusements will be suspended from 19 to 21 May.

Chinese Embassy in Tanzania will be open to public condolence from 9:00 to 11:30 and 15:00 to 16:30 during the three days.
