The latest information on the quake relief in China as of 20 May

  • Magnitude: revised from 7.8 to 8.0 Richter scale
  • Disaster area: around 100,000 square kilometers
  • The death toll: 40,075
  • Missing: 32,361
  • Survivors pulled out from the rubble: 6,375
  • The number of injured: 245,963
  • People rescued and transferred: 360,159
  • Latest rescued: Mr. Ma Yuanjiang at 00:50 a.m. of 20 May, nearly 179 hours after the quake.
  • Remain buried: more than 9,500 by 18 May. Rescuers including those from Russia, Japan, Singapore and the Republic of Korea, are still searching for survivors.
  • Aftershocks: over 7000. By 20 May, 159 measuring 4 or higher on the Richter scale. The biggest was magnitude 6.1.
  • People staying in government shelters: over 4.8 million
  • Houses damaged: 15.61 million, with 3.13 million collapsed.
  • Farmland damaged: 33,333 hectares, including more than 10,000 hectares of wheat and rice and more than 20,000 hectares of vegetables
  • Estimated economic damage: over 20 billion U.S. dollars
  • Relief fund earmarked by the Government: 11.727 billion yuan (1.69 billion U. S. dollars)
  • Donations of domestic and overseas: 13.925 billion yuan (2.026 billion U.S. dollars)
  • Cases of epidemics or emergent public health incidents: none

A DNA database will be build by the Government to allow identification of dead in the quake.

China State Council ordered a nationwide display of respect for the dead. Flags are to be kept at half-mast and all public amusements will be suspended from 19 to 21 May.

Chinese Embassy in Tanzania will be open to public condolence from 9:00 to 11:30 and 15:00 to 16:30 during the three days.

Chinese Embassy Opens for Public Condolence to the "5.12" Quake Victims

Condolence books have been opened to the public in the Chinese Embassy in Tanzania between 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. and 15:00 to 16:30 p.m. from 19th to 21st May, 2008 during the 3-day long morning period for the victims of the May 12th earthquake occurred in China's Sichuan province.
